Deception Island – Frozen in Time is a suite in four movements for brass band, composed by Magnus Brandseth for Krohnengen Brass Band’s performances on Siddis Brass and Brass in Concert in 2024. The suite depicts the scenery and history of Deception Island, an active volcanic island found in Antarctica’s South Shetland Islands. The island is recognizable by its distinct ring shape, in which its centre comprises a large ocean-filled crater formed by a massive eruption by the underlying volcano. The shape of the island provides a natural harbour, offering shelter from the harsh surrounding seas. Deception has a rich history, once serving as a base for British and Norwegian whalers in the early 1900s, where hopes of fortune often clashed with the relentless forces of the sea, ice, and molten rock.
The Volcano’s Heart – A Lament for Whalers and Whales
The third movement begins with an ominous portrayal of the volcano’s relentless fury at Deception Island, demonstrating how it devours the remnants of settlements and whaling stations without mercy. The soundscape crackles with heat and rumbles with eruptions, capturing the palpable tension as the earth reclaims its territory. As the violence of the eruption subsides, the music resolves into a calm and reflective passage, evoking a lament for the many whalers who lost their lives in pursuit of fortune, as well as the noble whales that fell victim to their ambitions. The tranquil stillness that follows mirrors the solemnity felt by many visitors to the island, inviting reflection on the fragile relationship between humanity and nature. In this reverent calm, the echoes of the sacrifices made by both whalers and whales linger in the air, creating a sense of connection that honours their intertwined fates.
