Mythical Creatures is a suite for brass band written by Magnus Brandseth for the Krohnengen Brass Band and their Siddis Brass 2023 performance. The suite consists of musical portraits of mythical creatures that have captured our imagination and curiosity for centuries. The four movements each depicts a mythical character, with distinct musical motifs. At the same time, the entire work is musically interwoven, and the observant listener will recognize recurring phrases and tonalities throughout the suite.
The Phoenix – Rising from the Ashes
The fourth movement portrays the Phoenix.
The Phoenix is a mythical creature that transcends time and culture, revered for its power of transformation and rebirth. According to ancient legends, the Phoenix would ignite itself in a burst of flames and then be reborn from its ashes.
This symbolizes the cycle of life and death and the possibility of renewal. The Phoenix is often associated with royalty and is revered for its power, majesty, hope, and strength. In this final movement, the suite reaches its narrative pinnacle. Through its energetic soaring melodies and triumphant fanfares, it encapsulates the very spirit of the Phoenix, evoking a sense of awe, hope, and change among the listeners.
