Deception Island – Frozen in Time is a suite in four movements for brass band, composed by Magnus Brandseth for Krohnengen Brass Band’s performances on Siddis Brass and Brass in Concert in 2024. The suite depicts the scenery and history of Deception Island, an active volcanic island found in Antarctica’s South Shetland Islands. The island is recognizable by its distinct ring shape, in which its centre comprises a large ocean-filled crater formed by a massive eruption by the underlying volcano. The shape of the island provides a natural harbour, offering shelter from the harsh surrounding seas. Deception has a rich history, once serving as a base for British and Norwegian whalers in the early 1900s, where hopes of fortune often clashed with the relentless forces of the sea, ice, and molten rock.
Neptune’s Bellows – Winds of Fate and Fury
The fourth and final movement centres on the island’s narrow entrance called “Neptune’s Bellows” . The entrance is only 230 meters wide and is known for its strong and unpredictable gusts of wind that sweep down from the steep cliffs. The name evokes the Roman god of the sea, whose control over the waters is mirrored in the turbulent winds that can suddenly rush through this passage. These powerful bellows’ create a serious navigational challenge for those brave enough to navigate its dangerous straits, where the forces of nature can change in an instant. As sailors approach this formidable gateway, they must summon both skill and courage to face the obstacles that lie ahead. This movement honours the unwavering spirit of those who confront the fury of the elements in their quest for adventure and fortune.
