Mayaene spådde i sin Langtidskalender at verdens undergang skulle komme den 21. desember 2012. Dette stykket ble skrevet i frykt for at de skulle ha rett, og er inspirert av visjoner om at dette skulle skje ved naturkatastrofer som jordskjelv, voldsomme vulkanutbrudd og tsunamier.
Det musikalske materialet er komponert i halv/hel-skalaen, og består av to hovedidéer: Hovedtemaet er en voldsom fortissimo i horn, tromboner, bassinstrumenter og slagverk. Sidetemaet kontrasterer dette med en søkende og leken leggiero i snillere dynamikker som får vist fram klangfargene i lys treblås. På tross av den kaotiske karakteren i musikken er stykket skrevet i en ryddig sonatesatsform. Og selv om innholdet og inspirasjonen til musikken er dyster og pessimistisk, håper jeg at musikantene kan ha det gøy med de ekstreme karakterene og kontrastene i stykket.

The ancient Maya predicted in their Long Count calendar that the world as we know it would end on December 21, 2012. This piece was written in fear that they might be right, and is inspired by the envisions of natural disasters like earthquakes, tremendous volcanic eruptions and tsunamis.
The musical material is composed around the half-step/whole-step diminished scale, and consists of two themes: The main theme is a violent fortissimo in horns, trombones, bass instruments and percussion. The secondary theme contrasts this with a searching, playful leggiero at gentle dynamics showcasing the bright timbres of the highest woodwinds. In spite of the chaotic character in the music, the piece is written in classic orderly sonata form. And even though the subject matter is gloomy and pessimistic, my wish is that players can have some fun with the extreme characters and contrasts in this piece.
