Stykket er en musikalsk fremstilling av en vikingkonges reise fra livet på jorden, kjent som Midgard i norrøn mytologi, til Valhall.
Den første satsen viser kongens heroiske liv og hans mange episke slag på jorden. Hans ønske er å dø ærefullt i krig. Dette gir han innpass i Valhall, en majestetisk hall i Åsgard, herredømme til guden Odin.
Den andre satsen viser den mystiske Bifrost, en brennende reinbuebro som strekker seg fra Midgard til Åsgard, gudenes rike. Musikken i denne satsen skildrer den melankolske atmosfæren av en konges begravelse.
I den tredje satsen kan man høre den siste stigningen mot Valhall. Odins tema i denne satsen representerer kongens maning til kamp. Brølet fra krigerne er øredøvende mens Odin, ridende på sin 8-beinet Sleipnir, fører dem til krig.
A musical depiction of a Viking Kings journey from life on Earth, known as Midgard in Norse mythology, to Valhall,
the hall of the slain.
The first movement relates to the Kings heroic life on earth and his many epic battles. His wish as a warrior, is to die as a hero in battle. This will enable him to gain entry to Valhall, a majestic hall located in Asgard and ruled over by the god Odin.
The second movement illustrates the mystical Bifrost. Bifrost is a burning rainbow bridge that reaches from Midgard to Asgard, the realm of the Gods. The music in this movement captures the melancholic atmosphere of a a Kings funeral.
In the third movement we hear the final approach to Valhall. Odin has a theme in this movement representing his speech to his warriors before entering the battle field. The roars of the warriors are clearly heard, before Odin leads them into battle upon Sleipnir, his 8 legged steed.
